The Power of Inductive Reasoning

The pungent smell of bloodshed spread across the battlefield. A young North Korean soldier, just turned twenty, was lying next to his comrade’s lifeless body. It was a brutal scene of devastation and the worst combat as far as he could remember.

Bullets flew everywhere, grenades exploding as far as his blurred vision could reach. Most of his comrades seemed dead. The rest of them were severely injured and putting them out of their misery appeared to be the only merciful thing to do. He looked around. To his horror, he was the only survivor in his squad.

Was this incredible luck or misfortune? If there was anything worse than death on the battlefield, it was to be captured by the enemy—the South Korean army. The soldier whispered to himself, “Why think separately of this life and the next when one is born from the last?”

He believed in reincarnation. If he died here today, he would be reborn in the next life in a different body. But he would still be around. Keeping this in mind brought him serenity as a man ready to die. He had no business being here in this brutal war. The only thing that dragged him here was that he was born in North Korea.

Being born to a White Russian mother and a North Korean father, he spoke fluent Russian. Right before the war, he was teaching Russian at a high school. The blood of his comrades was smeared over his handsome face. He muttered again, “Why think separately of this life and the next when one is born from the last?”

He jolted awake when a sharp piece of metal stung him behind his head. Someone was aiming at him with the end of a rifle.

“Get up, you red brat!”

It was undoubtedly a South Korean accent he was not used to. He slowly got up with his arms over his head. And that was it. He was now a captive.
